It is tough job market out there
Something really surprised me from a news website.
“Cathy Hoyt had to tell job-hunters the bad news. They had arrived too late to get an interview for a job at the new larger store Safeway will open on Mission Street in Santa Cruz in July.”
Would you laugh at this or what?
First, for finding a entry level job, I won’t focus on the public job openings. A simple reason is the public openings attract too many job applicants. If you read the above news right, you get a sense of competition going on in those public entry level job openings.
Secondly, you will have a better chance to find a starter job in the small business area. That is the biggest secrets I would like to share with you. Small business is dynamic and usually has higher turn-over ratio but it has a big appetite for entry level employees. Once you get yourself established in the industry, trained on the job, then you can decide if you would like to pursue more advance career.
Small business can’t afford expensive recruiting methods like posting jobs, hiring job agents, and so on. So we pretty much rely on referral from friends and employees, or direct contact from active job hunters.
Cold call or Direct Mail offers the best chance to find entry level jobs

1. You need research your target industry, major players, industry classification and business directory. Narrow your target areas and make a short-list from business directory or YellowPages based upon who you would like to work for. Apparent, you don’t have time to go after all of them. So focus on most fruitful areas.
2. Contact them directly. If you are comfortable with telephone selling, some of you might want to do cold-call for jobs. Personal, I prefer to run direct mail campaign, or so called targeted mail broadcast. We are getting amazing result with that. Giving the fact there are so many spammer out there, email usually is not a good option for this purpose.
3. Still you need a presentable cover letter and resume for quick recognition from the employer.

It really pays to think about how the market is really in demand that is about research again. I don’t believe you need go back to school, but some learning does help you with more sellable skills. You will be more attractive for hiring for sure. You can go out of your core skills, build something practical and useful while you are having more time at your disposal.
Persistent and Consistent
Obviously, there isn’t any easy food for us those days while unemployment rate is going above 2 digits very soon. If you decide to target the invisible job market and then start from learning how to find a job in the hidden job market first. It is not difficult, it is embarrassing that the fact is everyone can learn it.
I was a new immigrant and have found jobs through the hidden job market. I have coached the people successfully as well. There isn’t any reason you can’t find a job quickly in the hidden job market, but it requires persistent and consistent. The biggest challenge is job hunters quite offer give up too soon.
Co-op
I am not a big fun of co-op I rather improve my job search skill and find a paid job rather than wasting time on unpaid job. It makes you afraid of going out and getting the result. You are just going to hate yourself.
At the end of co-op term, there is still no guarantee for the position, so what are you going to do? Start all over again. That is testing my sanity here.
