It sounds like a dream, doesn’t it? However, personally I would not work for a job that requires me to commute more than half hour one way. I know that does stress my job searching skill.

It makes smaller cities more attractive to a lot of people in North America now. Life style is quite relaxing and less stressful between work and family. You know what, money isn’t everything, right. I won’t waste approximately 500 hours a year on the road by myself. That is boring… In the other hand, I love to ride my bike to the work.

Of course, the question is “how to find jobs near me”? If you happen to live in one of big cities on the list above. Let me show you.

If you only target the job openings on the Internet job search sites, such as Monsters, Yahoo Hotjob, and Workopolis (Canada site), then you really have no guarantee to find jobs near you. You get to eat whatever is available. Too bad.

Don’t the companies near you have any job openings? Absolutely, they do!

In any kind of job market condition, there is 4% nature downsizing in any given companies. People retire, people move on and find a better job with better pay, or better benefit, or like we hoped, closer to home.

What does matter is if you possess the skills to find job in your area.

Open your local phone books, there are thousands companies near you. It might be smart to target those company just to contact them directly and ask if they have any opening or not. Of course, you should not pick randam companies and just call them. I don’t have life for a thick YellowPages.

What it takes is to filter out of the companies from the list that are either not an interest to you or less chance to have any openings. It is a crucial to conduct your own research to make a short-list out of business directory, you focus your job search effort on them.

You direct contact them by phone, by mail or even drop-in. You may surprise yourself, after a lot of Nos, you will get a solid yes. Even better there is almost zero competition once you identify the opportunity. That is what we called to find a job in the hidden job market.

There is anothe solution for get less of commuting is to convience your boss to let you work from home, let’s say, three days a week, or two days a week if all that possible.

It is not easy as your boss will worry about you might swing away from the team culture, or less productive, etc.

There are so many advertising on Google searches, offering you the opportunities to work from home and making $xxx per day or per week. I haven’t tried myself, but it might be a legitimate business to do.

You might just buy a small business to run or start on your own. Solve that issue once for all.
